| Steve Cox was hired by the South Davis Fire District as a part time firefighter in September of 1989. In July of 1994 he was hired as a full time firefighter by the district at the title of engineer. In January of 2000 Steve was promoted to the position of Fire Marshal for South Davis Fire District.
When Bountiful City Fire and South Davis Fire District merged in 2005, Steve continued in the role as Fire Marshal. He was also employed on a part time basis as the Fire Marshal of Farmington City Fire Department. Steve was very knowledgeable in building plans and reviews, inspections, fire investigations, and fire code regulations and enforcement. He worked throughout all of South Davis County, working with local building officials and city officials. On August 26, 2011 Steve was participating in a firefighter skills fitness test at fire station 81 in Bountiful. During this test Steve started to have difficulty breathing and maintaining his balance, the test was stopped and he was quickly treated by fellow firefighters. Steve was taken to Lakeview hospital for further medical care. Steve's condition deteriorated quickly, he was admitted to the ICU unit at Lakeview. The following day due to his condition he was airlifted to University of Utah medical center for care. On August 28, 2011 at approximately 300pm Steve passed away. It is unclear as to what caused this medical emergency. The State Medical Examiner's office is conducting an autopsy to determine the cause of death. This is the first Line of Duty Death in the South Davis Metro Fire Agency. Steve was married and leaves behind his wife, 3 sons, 1 daughter, and 1 step daughter, all are married. |
